Tools for removing broken screws and other fasteners with minimal damage to wood

Sizing

Choosing the Proper Sizes:

IF YOUR SCREWS ARE MADE OF HARDENED STEEL, YOU MUST USE LARGER SIZED UNSCREW-UMS AS DIRECTED IN THE TABLE BELOW - See ** !

Determine the wire size of your screws and refer to Fig. 1 and our table below to determine the sizes you need, or send us samples of your screws in a padded mailer.

  1. If the slot is badly damaged, remove the head with a twist drill or make a deep pilot hole in the head and cut through the rest of the head with an UNSCREW-UMS™.
  2. When the shank is exposed, select the proper-sized UNSCREW-UMS™ from the Shank colum in the table below (see Fig. 2).
  3. When dealing only with the threaded portion of the screw, select the proper-sized UNSCREW-UMS™ from the Thread column in the table below (see Fig. 3).
  4. Any screw flush with the top of the wood should be beveled with an UNSCREW-UMS™ one size larger than the one you select to remove the screw, or a guide block should be used to steady the UNSCREW-UMS™ at the start.

* Long UNSCREW-UMS™ tend to distort more easily and should be used ONLY when reaching through planking thicker than 1” or when removing very long fasteners (e.g. 4” +).

** For HARDENED SCREWS of this wire size, use an UNSCREW-UMS™ which has a 1/16" larger O.D. than that shown.
